Learning Beyond the Classroom, Field Trip to Jatim Park 3
Saint Joseph Montessori Elementary School (SJMES) marked an exciting milestone with its inaugural field trip to Jatim Park 3 in Batu, East Java. Joined by students, faculty members, and parent volunteers, the educational excursion provided a unique opportunity for children to experience hands-on learning while exploring science, history, culture, and the arts in an engaging environment.
Rooted in the Montessori philosophy of experiential education, the field trip was designed to connect classroom lessons with real-world experiences, allowing students to deepen their understanding through observation, exploration, and meaningful interaction.
One of the day’s highlights was the visit to Dino Park, where students stepped back in time to discover the fascinating world of prehistoric life. Surrounded by lifelike, full-scale animatronic dinosaurs, they identified different dinosaur species, explored prehistoric timelines, and compared the characteristics of herbivores and carnivores. These hands-on experiences reinforced biology lessons while encouraging curiosity about Earth’s natural history.
The learning journey continued at the World Music Museum, where students explored the rich diversity of musical traditions from around the globe. By interacting with traditional and modern instruments, they gained a deeper appreciation of how sound is produced while discovering the cultural significance of music across different continents. The experience combined science, creativity, and cultural understanding in an enjoyable and memorable way.
Students also visited The Legend Stars Park, where realistic displays of influential world leaders, historical figures, and cultural icons brought history lessons to life. Walking through the exhibits allowed children to connect familiar classroom topics with immersive visual experiences, making historical narratives more engaging and meaningful.
In Montessori education, learning extends beyond textbooks and classroom walls. Educational field trips provide children with concrete sensory experiences that strengthen understanding and inspire lifelong curiosity. Observing prehistoric creatures, experimenting with musical instruments, and encountering representations of historical figures helped students build meaningful connections between academic concepts and the world around them.
